So You Dont Get Screwed!
Dont Be Hammered When You Get Your Tattoo
Too many times I see people come into the tattoo shop where I hang out bitching about the price of their full sleeve that took weeks to complete or the full back tattoo with 5 colors that took months to achieve.
They complain these tattoos cost $1,000+ and cant pay the rest of the bill. Now if you were smart you would realize the cost of getting inked before you actually sit in the chair and in most cases you will have to pay the full amount or at least a deposit before the artist starts.
But in a case where your artist does not charge the full amount up front or just ask for a little deposit, MAKE SURE YOU ASK THE COST! You may think a little tattoo with 3 colors cost $150 when in actuality it can cost up to $400 depending on design and location.
Put it this way, you wouldnt buy a car without first asking how much it was so save yourself a headache and just ask up front. You may even want the tattoo shop to put the quote in writing to later avoid any confusion.
Get the Price BEFORE You Start Your Ink.
BIG MISTAKE. I have done this myself and let me tell you it was a terrible mistake. I now have that tattoo covered up but it took almost 4 sessions and a cost of $450!
We all like to have a drink or ten once in a while but dont be stupid and go get a tattoo when you are doing this. In my state of WI it is actually illegal for a tattoo shop to tattoo a person who has been drinking and they can lose their business license but this is not the standard.
If you need a drink to loosen up then have at 'er but not a good choice to wonder pass the tattoo shop after pounding down 5 Cherry Bombs and 6 shots of Rum Chata!
Ask Your Tattoo Artist the Proper Questions, Especially if This is Your First Time.
For a first timer getting a tattoo can be scary but dont worry, it is not as bad as people think. But you will want to ask you artist questions to make sure he/she knows what they are doing.
1. Do you wash your hands before and after each session?
2. Do you wear latex gloves while tattooing?
3. Do you use new needles for each session, each color if neccessary? Also called single service materials.
4. Sanitize your work space with an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)-approved viricidal disinfectant
5. How long have you been in business? Now if they say less than a year it does not mean they are not good but, we all have to start somewhere but you may want to ask for referrals.
6. Do you do free touch ups after the work has been done...after a year if the ink fades?
7. What do you specialize in? Even the best artist are not great at everything. For example there is a guy in CA where people that come from all over the world to get his portrait work done. He is the best at it but is not that great at tribal lettering or gothic lettering.
8. Are they nice and sincere when answering your questions? If they seem stand-offish or offended then you want to look elsewhere. This is a business like any other and customer service is still #1. A lot of times business owners get offended when asked simple questions because they know they do not follow them or dont have the answer.
9. Is there an autoclave on site? This is a piece of equipment that sterilizes equipment.
Eat Something Before You get Inked.
Sounds stupid but if you are squeamish with blood, needles or just have a low pain tolerance you want to eat foods that have iron in them such as fruits, berries and meat.
Now be careful on how much you consume as you dont want to have to stop the session to take a crap or have to pee every 10 minutes!
Stay away from a lot of liquids and of course, prunes!!!!
You will also want to avoid aspirin or any other blood thinning agents (liquor) as this will make you bleed more.
*Important*
If feeling faint during your session tell the artist right away. You may have low iron or blood sugar and about ready to pass out. In most cases a quick snack like a Snickers will do the trick.
How Long Does it Take a Tattoo to Heal?
Depends on the size but any tattoo starts the healing process in 5-10 days. If you apply the proper ointment the artist gives you when done you should not have any problems.
Tattoo Basics
Schedule an Appointment!
Some artist are so busy you will be on the waiting list for up to a few months! My tattoo artist does all of the Green Bay Packers so during the football season you can wait up to 3 months to get in. If before you appointment you need to cancel or chicken out, give fair warning to the artist/parlor so they can book someone else. It is only fair to them as this is how they make money and you cant make money with an empty chair.
Does it Hurt?
Yes, No, Maybe, Oh Hell Yes???
It all depends on the person and the location. My girlfriend has 6 tattoos and none of them, according to her, hurt. I have tattoos and I actually fell asleep in the chair as I was so relaxed. I have a friend who almost passed out during his session and a women friend who cried when she got her foot tattoo.
We are all different and handle things different. If you freak out and cry over a bee sting, you may want to go ahead with the stick on tattoos.
Conclusion | If it Does Not Feel Right, It Probably Isn't
Use your judgment. If you walk into a parlor and things do not feel right then they probably are not. I know of a really good tattoo shop near my area that got shut down due to prostitution and drug deals in the back room. When I first walked in for my very first tattoo something just did not add up for me so I continued my search. Good Thing Huh?
Hope this helps you when you go to get your next girl tattoo designs!
